1/9/2020 0 Comments #7 - The coldest day on earthThe coldest day on earth was recorded at −89.2°C in Soviet Vostok Station in Antarctica on July 21st, 1983, at ground level. Yes, of course, Toronto is not that cold, and it is still bearable. There are still a lot of fun winter activities you can do in this water. But if you have just recently moved to this great city, you perhaps don’t know how to deal with the cold weather, just like how I used to be back in 2002 when I first immigrated here from Taiwan. By the way - Taiwan just had a Presidential election last night, our 7th direct voting for President since 1996, the only Chinese speaking, Asian majority place that is in a democratic system - very, very proud of it! (We're also the first Asia place to legalize same-sex marriage) 👍 Back then, the coldest temperature in Taiwan was around 13°C, and in Toronto, sometimes the temperature can go so low that you would feel like -38°C, just like last Jan 21st, 2019. So what can you do to make this winter more bearable? First and foremost, take advantage of our excellent heating system in Canada. As a resourceful country, we have an abundance of natural gas, and our heating system is one of the best in the world. Stay warm indoors and avoid outdoor activities if the temperature drops really low. And if you do have to go out, you can always get a fantastic Parka jacket like Canada Goose, although it’s not cheap, it’s definitely worth the investment. https://amzn.to/2QCHOOo However, my favorite tips are:
Legging might look funny if you’re not used to it, but honestly, it keeps your legs so warm and makes your life so much easier! If you want, don’t also forget to layer up your socks, double it! Trust me, when your feet are warm, so does your body!
Finally, once you layer up your body, your limbs, neck, head, be sure also to have a great pair of winter boots. Again, your feet will be the essential part of your body to keep you warm, and not only that, the icy ground will be so slippery, and the last thing you want is to fall on the cold and solid icy road. Another extra item I will always prepare and put in my pocket is the facial mask. You don’t have to use the thick winter one (unless you walk your dogs), but any thin, anti-air pollution ones are good enough to be a barrier for the cold breeze. https://amzn.to/306msvV They are light and easy to carry in your pocket! As for your home, if you live in a condo, then pretty much the heat will be tremendous and evenly spread out! However, if you live in a house, generally the first floor will be the warmest place and especially if you have a fireplace, that will be the go-to spot for everyone (put me and Milou sleep there) Second floor bedrooms will be cold. Sometimes it will be so cold that you might need an additional heater for that! I usually use my thermos bottle to prepare something hot and put beside the bed stand to sip it throughout the night. It warms up the body nicely. Another trick I use is to wear thick indoor socks to protect my feet - yes, once again, if your feet are warm, your whole body will be hot! Finally, you can layer up the bed and wear something warm to sleep - but be careful because if your body is too hot. We usually sleep much better under a colder temperature. Finally, take a hot bath before bedtime and enjoy a good night's sleep!!!
